Study title: Understanding individual sellers’ legitimacy evaluations of platform mechanisms: An institutional logic perspective
Researcher: Tracey Quach
Research ethics approval has been granted for this study to be carried out between 01/08/2024 and 31/12/2025
You are being invited to take part in a research study. Before you decide, it is important for you to understand why the research is being done and what it will involve. Please take time to read the following information carefully and ask if there is anything that is not clear or if you would like more information.
Take time to decide whether or not you wish to take part. Thank you for reading this.
What is the purpose of the study?
The research is carried out as part of my doctoral degree. The aim of this research is to critically examine the cognitive process of individual sellers when assessing the legitimacy of resale platforms and its impact on their behaviours as well as platforms’ performance. The study will be conducted across resale platforms in the UK and in Vietnam to allow for contextual and theoretical comparisons.
Why have I been invited to participate?
The study seeks to capture the perspective of individual sellers on resale platforms. At the same time, as part of a rigorous scientific process, we also consider insights provided by platform managers/leaders.
Therefore, if you are over the age of 18 and are either an individual seller who has sold or attempted to sell their used possessions on any online peer-to-peer resale platforms in the past year or a manager/leader of such platforms, we would love to invite you to take part in our study.
Do I have to take part?
As participation is entirely voluntary, it is up to you to decide whether or not to take part. The research process requires your time, and so we anticipate that those who volunteer will have a genuine interest in the topic. If you do decide to take part you will be given this information sheet to keep and you have to sign a consent form. If you decide to take part you are still free to withdraw without having to give a reason at any time up until 30 days after the interview date, at which time data is already anonymised, and it will be impossible to identify you.
What will happen to me if I take part?
If you agree to participate, you will be invited to take part in a video and/or audio recorded 45-90 minute semi-structured interview, taking place online via Microsoft Teams at a time convenient for you.
Are there any lifestyle restrictions?
There are no lifestyle restrictions.
What are the possible disadvantages and risks of taking part?
There are no anticipated disadvantages or risks associated with taking part in this study.
What are the possible benefits of taking part?
Your participation and insights could help generate recommendations and future research that will create better resale experiences and contribute to solving the broader solid waste crisis.
What if something goes wrong?
The persons to be contacted are my supervisor and/or the Chair of the CBASS Research Ethics Committee (see details at the end of this document).
Will my taking part in this study be kept confidential?
Pseudonyms will be adopted and you will remain anonymous in data presentation. Any data that may identify other individuals, groups or specific locations will be omitted.
Anonymised data will be retained confidentially in a locked/secure/password protected location on the Brunel University London network for up to ten years and may be used as the basis for future research, in line with University policy.
Our procedures for handling, processing, storage and destruction of data are compliant with the Data Protection Act 2018; however, if evidence of harm or misconduct comes to light, then, in line with research guidelines, confidentiality will have to be broken. We will tell you at the time if we think we need to do this, and let you know what will happen next.
Will I be recorded, and how will the recording be used?
The interviews will be video and/or audio recorded and transcribed with the aid of Microsoft Teams. Transcribed data will be anonymised and used for the analysis and writing-up of the findings. Once the process of anonymisation is completed, raw data will be deleted, and anonymised data will be retained for 10 years as per the university data management policies. All data will be stored, secured, and password protected on the cloud services of Brunel University London, and only me and my supervisor will have access to the data.
What will happen to the results of the research study?
Findings from the research may be presented at conferences and seminars, used in my thesis, and published in academic journals. When writing or talking about the research, we will ensure that the information included is fully anonymised. This will involve using pseudonyms and withdrawing any specific detail that would allow your identification.
Who is organising and funding the research?
The project is organised by me as a doctoral researcher in Brunel Business School, Brunel University London. The project receives funding from the College of Business, Arts and Social Sciences, Brunel University London as part of my doctoral studies.
Who has reviewed the study?
The College of Business, Arts and Social Sciences Research Ethics Committee has reviewed this study to ensure that it complies with university guidelines in terms of anonymity, confidentiality, data protection, and potential harm to participants. All this is part of our standard procedure and ensures that research is conducted ethically.
